What does folk poetry look like when knitted? How can a sweater be both a garment and a story at the same time?

Jenna Moist Knitted Kalevala contains 18 knitting patterns inspired by the poems of the Kalevala, such as the Suolaulu shirt, Joukahainen socks and the Pohjolan neito jacket. Their elaborate embroidery patterns are inspired by Finnish, Scandinavian and Baltic traditional knitting. The knitting patterns feature Baltic Finnish mythical stories, ancient symbols, religious creatures and nature. At the same time, they offer a Finnish equivalent to the highly popular Icelandic knitting patterns.

All the knits in the book are knitted in one piece, and the patterned knits only use two colors at a time – which is why they are also easy for less experienced knitters to make. The instructions make versatile use of both thinner and thicker yarns, and the knitter is offered several yarn options.

Jenna Kostet is an author and knitwear designer known for several hit knitwear pieces, such as the Suolaulu shirt. She has also published several historical novels and children's books.
